Breakfast With The Collective

The theme for the morning was simple: the circle is forming, but it is not complete without you.

Throughout the event, we shared more about CGAACo’s mission to fill the gaps within the gaps by supporting local nonprofits that can respond quickly and compassionately when individuals and families face urgent, practical needs. These needs may not always fit neatly into traditional grant cycles, public programs, or larger systems, but they can still determine whether a neighbor remains stable or falls deeper into crisis.

We also welcomed a representative from United Way of Central Maryland, who helped attendees better understand ALICE households. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, and refers to individuals and families who are working but still struggling to cover the true cost of living. The presentation reminded us that ALICE households are our neighbors, coworkers, caregivers, service workers, older adults, and families doing their best while living one emergency away from instability.

During the program, we discussed CGAACo’s early grantmaking goals. Once we reach $30,000 in grant dollars, our goal is to begin offering micro-grants of $1,000 to $5,000 to local nonprofits through a simple application process. These grants will support people-first programs that address urgent and practical needs, such as transportation, gas cards, utility support, short-term childcare assistance, and other services that help families stay stable.

We also had an honest and thoughtful conversation with attendees about nonprofit capacity, inclusive membership, fundraising, and how CGAACo can continue growing beyond Annapolis to reach communities throughout Anne Arundel County. That conversation reflected what this giving circle is all about: neighbors listening, learning, and building something together.

Breakfast with The Collective was another step in forming a circle rooted in community, dignity, and shared responsibility. We are grateful to everyone who attended, asked questions, shared ideas, and helped move this work forward.
